Certamen teams win at Crusader Classic
On Saturday, December 14th, our Certamen teams traveled to St. Michael’s Catholic Academy for the annual Crusader Classic Certamen Competition, going head to head with a number of public and private schools from Central Texas.
Hill Country fielded three middle school teams, and instructor Sean Mathis is proud to report they were the top three scoring teams in the middle school division. He stated, “The rule is that only one team from each school per division can advance to finals, so our A team went up and won the Middle School division! It was our first time to win 1st place at the Crusader Classic in the Middle School Division! Our Middle School teams were the three top-scoring teams overall. This is a tremendous achievement for all of them, and an extra shout-out for the A team, which closed it down by taking first in the Final Round against Keeling Middle School and Grace Academy.” Members of the middle school teams are:
MS A Team: David Palacios, Garrett Crider, Mason Nelson, Garren Ferreira
MS B Team: Paige Glace, Andrew Prado, Jack Farrell, Austin Grendel
MS C Team: Reid Conway, Justin Herring, Jacob Senior, Dominic Toledo
On the high school level, Hill Country brought our first ever Intermediate team to the tournament.
The team, comprised of Christian Senior, Liam Ferreira, and Chris Peery, qualified for finals and took second overall, losing to Clark High School, our rivals, by only 2 questions. Sean Mathis reported, “This is the first high school team to enter a tournament in three years, and the fact that they went to finals two tournaments in a row is astonishing progress. And it means that Roman and Greek Culture is working as an elective course!”
The team plans to compete in another tournament in February and then at State in April. Congratulations, Knights, for this outstanding achievement!
