The Purpose of Homecoming

Dear Hill Country Families,

With Homecoming this week, the halls have been pleasantly buzzing with anticipation here at Hill Country Christian School.

While Homecoming has a number of fun elements, what you may not know about Homecoming is its purpose: to invite our alumni and their parents back to campus to reconnect with their (or their child’s) alma mater. Yes, we want to celebrate with our current students, so we include many fun activities throughout the week, culminating on Friday and Saturday. However, our school ultimately exists to send our students into the world as ambassadors for Christ. In this way, we are a launching pad for our students, and everything we do is aimed at preparing them for the next chapter of their lives. Specifically, we want them academically prepared and, most importantly, spiritually grounded so they can stand firm in their faith and be prepared to make a kingdom impact upon graduation.

This is why we want to invite them back to campus each year. We want to have the opportunity to catch up and hear how God is working in their lives and using them to impact His kingdom. It also serves as a vision-casting mechanism for our current students. They get a glimpse of where they are headed. The Hill Country Way doesn’t end upon graduation. The goal is for our students to continue building on the foundation they received here upon leaving their formal education at our school.

With all of this said, it brings two things to mind. First, it reminds me of an even greater homecoming all of us as believers have to look forward to when we make it to our true home in heaven. In a sense, all of us are just like our students. We are building on the foundation we’ve received in preparation for our eternal home. I can’t wait for that day. Second, you may have considered the irony of celebrating a homecoming that is not technically at our home campus. Join me in praying that God would make a way for us to have homecoming games on our physical campus.

We hope that all our festivities over the next few days will inspire our current students and serve as a welcome return for our alumni and parents. We also hope it will be a great opportunity for community building within our school, all for God’s glory and our good.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you tomorrow night at our Homecoming game!

See you soon and Go, Knights!
