Classical Covenantal Education: A Guide for Parents

Helping Your Child Grow in Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom
You know you want a Christian education for your child, one that strengthens their faith, sharpens their mind, and surrounds them with people who care deeply about their future. But not all private Christian schools are the same. What exactly should you look for? It’s a unique and beautiful thing to find a school who’ll partner with you to educate, inspire and prepare your child to walk with God when they step into the world on their own as adults.
At Hill Country Christian School, we offer a classical covenantal education. That means:
- A structured, time-tested approach to learning that fosters wisdom, wonder, and critical thinking
- A community of families united by their faith in Christ
- A biblical worldview in every subject, so education isn’t just about head knowledge, but about forming hearts to recognize truth, beauty, and goodness
Let’s take a closer look at what “classical” and “covenantal” really mean and why they matter for your child.
What Is Classical Education?
A classical education is built on a structured, joyful approach that aligns with how children naturally grow and learn. It’s not about being old-fashioned or rigid; it’s about helping students fall in love with learning while wrestling with life’s biggest questions. At Hill Country, classical learning follows a three-stage model:
- Elementary School: The Grammar Stage — Children are sponges, and in the early years, they naturally absorb information. This stage emphasizes memorization, core knowledge, and foundational skills across subjects like history, science, math, and language arts.
- Middle School: The Logic Stage — As students grow, they begin questioning and making connections. This stage helps them develop reasoning skills, analyze arguments, and think critically.
- High School: The Rhetoric Stage—Teenagers learn to express their ideas clearly and confidently. They refine persuasive writing, eloquent speech, and effective communication.
“This leads to great texts, great books, and great conversations,” said Jacob Lindsey, high school principal.
Our curriculum draws from Scripture and the best artists, writers, and thinkers of the past to help students prepare both academically and spiritually for the modern world.
“School doesn’t have to be torture,” one teacher said. “One of the ways we experience joy is through classical education.”
Beyond academics, we focus on the heart — and that’s where the covenantal piece comes in.
What Does ‘Covenantal’ Mean?
In Christian education, there are two main types of schools: missional and covenantal. Both can offer high-quality academics and Christian faculty, but their approaches to community can be different. At Hill Country Christian School, we are proudly covenantal. This means we partner with families who are committed to following Jesus. Every family includes at least one professing Christian parent who affirms our Statement of Faith, creating a close-knit community united by shared faith and purpose. It’s often described as a “three-legged stool,” with each leg working together to help children flourish. You don’t need to be a member of a specific denomination — or attend our founding church, Hill Country Bible Church — to join our school. You only need to commit to the essentials of the Christian faith. (In fact, we currently have students from more than 90 churches.) Our community is theologically diverse, but united in the essentials of the Christian faith. This covenantal approach makes a difference in real, practical ways. Parents quickly build meaningful friendships with other families who share their values, and students grow up in a community where teachers and classmates reinforce the biblical truths they learn at home.
“This leads to great texts, great books, and great conversations,” said Jacob Lindsey, high school principal.

We want students to see themselves as part of a broader body of believers, using our gifts to impact the world for Christ. This balance makes Hill Country Christian School a place where families do life together, supporting one another through challenges while celebrating victories.
How Does This Help My Child?
When your child walks into a classroom, you want to know they are in a place that strengthens their faith. You want them to ask big questions, wrestle with complex ideas, and grow in understanding and wisdom.
That’s the heart of classical covenantal education.
At Hill Country Christian School, every discussion, every assignment, and every subject is viewed through the lens of God’s truth. They learn to seek wisdom, appreciate beauty, pursue truth, and recognize goodness as reflections of God himself.
