Arts
Purpose
The mission of the Fine Arts Department is to educate the mind, senses, and emotions of each student through structured creativity which supports and enriches the school’s Christ-centered and classical core curriculum.
Philosophy
An understanding of the arts leads first to appreciation. Deeper involvement and experience with the disciplines aids conceptual and perceptual awareness of life. Emotions can be triggered and examined. Sensory awareness can be developed through music and studio art. Values and understanding of human frailties can be examined and expressed. Decision-making and problem-solving are explored and mastered. Students learn how to be more creative and to think “outside the box.” Businesses and industry need these abilities in the workplace, along with team-building and critical-thinking skills. The arts train students in both. Confidence and fine motor skills are developed in the young student through manipulation of hands–on experiences with tools and instruments. Observational practice lends itself to developing visual acuity and awareness of surroundings. In a nutshell, the arts help develop the higher thinking skills.
